Many students who arrive at Musitechnic confuse the roles of the mixing engineer and the mastering engineer. Yet these are two distinct professions, with different tools, reflexes, and career paths.
Mixing: building the balance
The mixing engineer works with the individual tracks of a recording — vocals, drums, bass, guitars, synths — and assembles them into a coherent whole. They manage equalization, compression, spatial effects (reverb, delay) and automation so that every element finds its place in the sonic spectrum.
Mastering: the final touch
The mastering engineer, on the other hand, receives the final mix and optimizes it for distribution: sonic consistency between the tracks of an album, levels suited to streaming standards (Spotify, Apple Music), and general polishing.
Why learn both?
