Prise de son

The “Audio production techniques” is given in three threemesters over a period of 12 months. It prepares for audio work in the fields of music and audiovisual.

The graduate is able to work as a sound technician, better known under the terminology of a  Sound engineer or Audio Engineer.

In Quebec the term engineer is reserved for members of the “Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec”.

Details of the school year:

Session 1:

The first session covers all the basic theoretical and practical knowledge needed with courses such as:

  • Audio Workstation:
    • Notions for the design of audio workstation; Computer, MIDI, connections, network, and basic electricity notions.
  • Audio Recording:
    • The concepts necessary for sound recording and using the tools found in an audio studio.
  • Audio and technologies:
    • Synthesis and Sampling : The creation and modification of instrument sounds and sound effects through sound synthesis tools such as the synthesizer and the sampler.
    • Sequencer: The notions and techniques to use a sequencer for music production.
    • Overview of the music industry : The concepts to understand the workings of he industry, who does what, copyrights…

Session 2:

The second session covers the techniques and practices in the audio field, with courses such as:

  • Music Production Techniques:
    • Notions and techniques needed for music production like: musical MIDI programmation, digital audio sculpting, musical reparation (rythmic and melodic), comping of tracks, musical notes …
  • Audio Production Techniques:
    • The concepts and techniques needed to design and synchronize a soundtrack for an audiovisual or interactive project.
  • Audio Mixing:
    • Mixing techniques for differents types of musical and audio productions.

Session 3:

The third session aims to prepare students for real world audio work with projects and real world scenarios:

  • Music Production :
    • Music production project of creating a radio hit song with a real life music producer.
    • Personnal Music production project: specialisation
    • Digital Audio Mix: music mixing projects. (remix, music for tv, music for games, preparation for a live show,…)
  • Audio Production:
    • Post-Production project of a video or game: Sound Design Project for a video, sound, recording, editing and mixing an audio-visual and / or interactive. This project is a collaboration with the NAD Center. Videos exemples
    • Personnal Post-Production project: Specialisation (Radio, game, tv, add,…)
    • Career management : How to prepare for working in audio. CV Jobs interviews…

Program hours details:

  • 315 hours of classroom training
  • 330 hours of practical training
  • 315 hours of student personal work

Duration of training:

12 months divided into three sessions.

Degree:

Successful completion of all courses leading to graduation AEC (attestation of collegial studies) from the Quebec’s Ministry of Education.
